Paper usage accounts for roughly one third of our waste even though it’s one of the easiest materials to re-use and recycle!Encourage staff and others not to print e-mails, make PDF copies of important files and documents and send them electronically if possible, save these documents to a shared drive instead of storing boxes of paper files and install a fax machine that sends PDF files to your inbox. When you do need to print important documents, make sure you use a sustainable paper, and set your printer or copier to print on both sides of the page.

Recycling is never a chore when it’s easier than throwing something away. The concept of the “Binless Office” is simple and efficient. It involves the removal of the under desk general waste bins, and the introduction of a “Desk Tray Recycler”, whereby all materials are placed in the tray throughout the working day. At the end of the day or when the tray is full, the tray is brought to a central recycling area and the materials in the tray are segregated into bins specific to each waste stream.

Since the introduction of the WEEE Regulations 2005 Consumers can bring their unwanted electrical and electronic equipment to their local Civic Amenity centres for recycling free of charge.

Lights out & Pull that Plug

You don’t work around the clock, so why does your computer need to? Turn off everything you possibly can before you leave the office each day. Make sure board and meeting room lights are off before you leave or if possible install motion sensor lights. Computers, printers and other office gadgets should all be powered down before leaving the office this saves on both energy and on cost. Never leave things like phone chargers plugged in when you’re not using them. They still draw energy, regardless of whether there’s anything plugged into them. Speaking of energy efficiency, make sure you stock your office with energy-saving appliances and compact florescent light bulbs.
